Diagnosing autism is based on behavior, not depends on the cause or mechanism

DIAGNOSING AUTISM

Autism is a developmental disability that affects infants, but symptoms can be properly diagnosed until much later. Autism can be mild or severe - is a challenge for almost debilitating when it comes to functioning of society. Still a lot that is unknown about autism - it is not clear what causes it, and there is no real cure. But there is a therapeutic treatment to help people with autism as a diagnosis is made. In most cases, autism is diagnosed and noted in childhood, symptoms may become apparent in about 3 years. The onset must be before the age of three years, with delays or abnormal functioning in both social interaction, language used in social communication, or symbolic or imaginative play. The disturbance is not better accounted for by Rett syndrome or childhood disintegrative disorder. ICD-10 uses essentially the same definition.

Pediatrician commonly performed through the study of the history and development of a physical check of the child. If it is warranted, diagnosis and assessments are carried out and help ASD specialists, observing and assessing cognitive, communication, family and other factors with standardized instruments, and taking into account all the related conditions. Children neuropsychologist is often asked to evaluate their behavior and cognitive abilities, as well as support for the diagnosis and help to recommend educational interventions.
